I have a stupid question because it’s been hot and I’m not sleeping well but if he wanted to purposefully take down Twitter wouldn’t he just take it down? He owns it. Couldn’t he just be like aaaand it gone 👏

this isn't a stupid question. you're right, he could just shut it down if he really wanted to and could probably do it in leaner ways then he supposedly is right now (i.e. less equity lost and less clout lost in the process). so, if that's the case, then what IS the purpose of what he is doing right now? i would consider this process deregulation of content. whether or not it links directly to the election is another question, but he's certainly made the platform barely functioning in ways that actually make the process of deregulation really quick. but there is always the likeliness that he just can't run a dev shop, he fired everyone who had control of the system and some of his change requests have broken fundamental parts of the system and there's no one to fix it. could be both things happening at the same time

idk anything about this specifically, but it did remind me of the authoritarian leader techniques i see in easter europe. for these authoritarian leaders it's better (for the dictator/those in power) to slowly destroy something, bit by bit. with the right-wing mindset slowly creeping up instead of making changes from one day to the other. most people don't give a damn about the slow nazification, the dictator only risks visible pushback if they change something fast ( ... )

I think it's a combination of him being incompetent, liking the attention this brings, and having a power trip.

because better than just take down your enemy and turn it into a martyr, it is better to devalue it entirely, removing any and all actual power and meaning it once had before burying it.

Because it would make the person feel more powerful to slowly take and destroy something.

He is probably getting off on it.

I think you’re right. He’s just trolling. Personally, when I troll I try to avoid looking like an idiot, but I guess it takes all types. It kind of reminds me of when I go to the casino and I’m like “how much money do I want to spend to make the lights flash and the noise loud?” And it’s like…20 bucks. Maybe 40. I guess his thrills are more expensive.

In addition to all the great points others have mentioned, he could also be biding time for Twitter "copycats" to catch up. If the shuts Twitter down outright, there would be a huge void for quite a bit of time and he'd make a huge enemy out of himself for so many businesses considering how much everyone has grown to rely on Twitter as a legit first hand news source. He might be a billionaire and richer than God but he still needs goodwill from other business people if he wants to stay in business.

With the elections coming up, I don't doubt that they'd rather people still comment on a neutered Twitter than have no where to see what that direction the public is swaying, especially it would mean that politicians have no way as effective to reach voters.
