Taylor Swift on the release of ‘Speak Now’ TV before performing ‘Dear John’:

“I’m 33 years old, I don’t care about anything that happened to me when I was 19… I’m not putting this album out so you can go on the internet and defend me against someone you think I wrote a song… pic.twitter.com/cFQbKQk8vD

I have a completely baseless theory that she thought the All Too Well 10 minute video was going to get her taken seriously as a director and lead to more opportunities, but it ended up just being cringe & an embarrassment for her in retrospect. And the Gyllenhaals getting spammed by her fans about the song didn't go well for her behind the scenes. I've always gotten the impression that even though she's hugely popular among the commonfolk what she really wants is industry clout and it's always escaping her.

I'm filing this post away in my confirmation bias folder

You may be onto something here but I also don’t think she’ll ever be able to get there. She doesn’t seem critical of herself to do something with humility. Like, the girl sincerely thought what she produced was Oscar worthy. I don’t know how someone escapes that level of delusion.

All these years of the Grammys kissing her ass and awarding her instead of other huge stars has made her think other “prestige” awards will follow suit. The music world has always fallen in line for this woman, now she’s realizing the Oscars doesn’t have to, and I love that for her.

Her albums have always been a reaction to the criticism of her previous work. However, her music videos have never received a ton of critique apart from critique of the song and theme. I think the videos she’s directed have been fine, but her work is generally serviceable and at times pretty good. She’s at least as good as a lot of MV directors. I would love for her to have enough success in the movie field to not have to hear about her antics in the press for a while because over exposure is no longer a risk for her. However, she’ll probably edit her movies while on tour and dating annoying men because she is nothing if not incredibly productive.

It's honestly insane. I'm still mad she got that garbage music video in to actual film festivals taking time and space from actual up and coming filmmakers who don't get that kind of platform easily. It's insulting.

i think this is spot on. she had a rollout for atw10 like it was supposed to be her first serious debut as a director, leading up to that feature film announcement. i think she hoped to establish some credibility with an award for atw10 and with that directors on directors interview

she'a gonna have an uphill battle for credibility because visual media is really not her thing

She is SUCH a bad director. My goodness, so very bad.

all of her directorial efforts have been so mediocre. the thing is, she has the money and could pursue it seriously, study film, etc if she wanted to but I get the sense she just wants to be rewarded for being immediately good at it without having to put in the work which, relatable, but also.

lmaooo true.

yeah idk, her stans point out that other good directors started in music videos and, while thats true, that's just the gig they were able to get lol. taylor truly does not have the range as a visual storyteller. shes never been a visuals artist anyway but her self-directed videos are all pretty bad

She has like a dozen Grammys, how much more industry clout does she want?

That’s the highest award given for music. Idk why she feels she needs to jump into another field when she’s doing fine in hers.

She’s always wanted respect from the film industry and it’s always alluded her. That’s why it’s always been funny when people want to credit her with joe’s career, coz like it or not, you can’t deny that his filmography is LOADED with respected directors and auteurs that most actors would die to work with, auteurs who Taylor would have absolutely no influence over whatsoever lol

Is she like a longtime avid film fan who’s always had a burning desire to jump into that world or something?

Did it start because of Joe? Is she the type of person who thinks they need to be in every area of their partner’s life?

Like I just don’t get why when she has the top award in her field multiple times over, that’s apparently not enough industry clout for her. I don’t get why she needs to be a part of another industry. Or why film in particular.

Or is she just the kind of person who got everything she wanted and realize it didn’t really make her that happy so she’s still chasing something that she perceives will fulfill her?

She's been wanting to get into the film industry for some time, but she's never been able to get in a critically acclaimed project. She's delusional about her talents to the point that she auditioned for Eponime in Les Miserables, but of course she didn't get it, and when she finally got able to be cast in a musical, well... Cats happened.
