it bothers me to this day (20 plus years after the movie) that no one seemed to have explained how the watertight compartments worked to the people steering the ship!

I read something on one of the Titaniac forums that more lifeboats wouldn’t have helped much here bc there wouldn’t have been enough time to fill and lower all of them before the ole girl sank.

That’s exactly it. They didn’t get the lifeboats they had off the ship in time.

they had more lifeboats than what was required by law. back then that was such a busy route that lifeboats weren't seen as actual lifeboats but as a mean to ferry passengers from one ship to another bc there's was always one near, in this occasion the california where unfortunately, everyone had gone to bed already. and how someone else said, there wasn't even time to fill the lifeboats they did have because it was an extremely cold night and people DID NOT want to get into them until it was too late.

also, there's no way of knowing a head on collision would have changed anything
