ONTD Original: The Weird and Wacky World of Celebrity/Fandom Theme Cruises
Most people have heard of cruises - a resort at sea filled with food, drinks, entertainment, fist fights, waves, and diseases. But did you know that many cruise ships across the world play host to cruises themed around celebrities, fandoms, and other groups? Indeed, many fans gather annually to celebrate their favorite celebrity, fandom, or shared hobby, meeting with fellow fans, their favorite stars, and other interesting encounters.
THE GOOP CRUISE
Did you know Gwyneth Paltrow hosted (well, sort of) her own Goop-themed cruise? For around $2,000 starting per person (plus an additional fee for the Goop sessions), the Celebrity Beyond in 2022 hosted the inaugural Goop Cruise (after being postponed from 2020 due to COVID), a wellness-themed 9 day sailing around the Mediterranean complete with wellness lectures, exercise sessions with celebrity trainers, health-focused excursions, tarot sessions female-focused panels complete with America's first female cruise ship captain, TikTok sensation Captain Kate, and a visit from Gwyneth herself in celebration of her 50th birthday. Columnist Lauren Oyler was sent by Harpers to cover the event in great detail (SOURCE), and was one of the few people who actually signed up. Turns out Goop fans aren't big into luxury cruises.
THE BROADWAY CRUISE / SETH'S BIG FAT BROADWAY CRUISE / ETC.
Ever dream of being stuck for several nights on board a ship with your favorite stars of stage and screen? The Broadway Cruise, Seth's Big Fat Broadway Cruise, The Playbill Broadway Cruise, and others are your chance to see private shows, interviews with stars such as Kristen Chenoweth, Christian Borle, Alan Cumming, Santino Fontana, and more. You can choose from destinations such as Alaska, the Mediterranean, Bermuda, and the Caribbean aboard such ships as the Celebrity Solstice, Queen Mary 2, NCL Pearl (sidenote, I'll be on this ship this November for a non-themed cruise, I will let any Broadway fans know how it was before their themed cruise), and others. If an entire week of your favorite Broadway stars sounds like too much, several cruise lines put on shortened versions of your favorite shows such as Beetlejuice, Six (until 2024), Mamma Mia, Cats, and others.
THE FURRY CRUISE
This November, Furry Cruise 2023 will depart from Los Angeles on the NCL Bliss for a 7 night voyage to Mexico. Take your fur suit and enjoy lectures, themed areas, and furry-themed events, meeting new friends and enjoying new experiences along with several thousand non-furries who did not sign up for this partial charter.
STAR TREK: THE CRUISE
In 2024, Star Trek: The Cruise VII will take place on Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas for a 7 night voyage fo Curacao and Aruba complete with Star Trek-themed shows, events, parties, and appearances from such stars as Sonequa Martin-Green, Walter Koenig, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, and a lot more (there are 25 confirmed so far). There will also be special lectures from Star Trek-experts to educate you on every Star Trek topic imaginable!
THE 80'S CRUISE
Ready for a throwback to the 1980s and all the music that you could ever dream of? In 2024, set sail on Mariner of the Seas (ok, if you can't tell, most themed cruises are held on a small number of ships that are generally not the newest, Goop-cruise excluded). Join 38 Special, Soft Cell, Air Supply Debbie Gibson, and more (plus some original MTV VJs) for a week of concerts, meet and greets, and pool parties galore in the sunny Caribbean.
OTHERS
Not into fandoms and celebs? Well, there are themed cruises for everyone! How about a swingers cruise with 6000 fellow swingers on one of the world's largest cruise ships, Symphony of the Seas? Couples only, clothing optional, and at least one play room filled with beds (be sure to tip the crew well). Are you a biker? Take a Rally at Sea cruise minus your Harley! There are also cruises specifically for fans of conspiracy theories, Zumba, cats, ghost hunting, conservative ideology, knitting, and goths. There will also be a Pokemon World Tournament held in Yokohama, Japan soon, but alas, it won't leave the dock. There is a cruise for everyone! Or you can just...take a cruise.
