It's really funny, it's structurally intriguing, and the cast is great. No one, aside from maybe Jason Schwartzman and Scarlett Johansson, gets a TON of screen time - it's a real ensemble piece. Tom Hanks fits so perfectly in his role, and I really hope we see him in more stuff like this. Jeffrey Wright is easily my favorite recent addition to the WA troupe. And while other WA films have resonated more for me emotionally, there is a short scene at the end that made me shed a couple of tears.
Overall, I really liked it, but it didn't hit the highs of The French Dispatch for me. And I know a lot of people don't like that one at all, where it is one of my faves. So I think Wes Anderson is just one of those filmmakers where everyone has their own takes on his work and connects emotionally with different films, so very few top 10 lists are alike. I think my overall ranking would be something like
10. Rushmore (I really don't like this movie!! Like, at all.)
9. Isle of Dogs
8. Moonrise Kingdom
7. The Life Aquatic
6. Darjeeling Limited
5. Asteroid City
4. Fantastic Mr. Fox
3. The Grand Budapest Hotel
2. The French Dispatch
1. The Royal Tenenbaums
though I might move a couple after rewatching, since I haven't seen a few of them in years. And I've never seen Bottle Rocket, so I'll have to watch that at some point.
Anyway, my husband fucking loved it. I think if you don't like other Wes Anderson movies, this one is not gonna change anything for you. But for WA fans, I can't predict where this will end up on your lists!
I want to watch Chevalier when I get a chance, but since I'm going away, it might be a bit!
