Parentifying and financially exploiting your children while ignoring one of them being a sexual abuser. Lord those parents are pieces of shit

Though I'm also really horrified at TLC enforcing that birth clause. Yes she should have read the contract before signing but holy fuck, even if she had read it and just changed her mind... what a fucking soulless thing to do. Just take back some of the money you paid her asshole father and let her give birth in peace

edit: No autocorrect I did not mean "prettifying." Yeesh.

mte, forcing a woman to film her giving birth must be some form of obstetric violence. Nevermind that she signed that contract without any legal assistance

Yeah I agree about TLC, even if she signed it, if she changed her mind there should be wiggle room.

TLC is garbage that takes advantage of uneducated and naive people

I mean, but let’s be honest here. Would Jill even understand the legalese if she did read it? People with normal schooling would have an issue understanding it. That’s why people hire lawyers.

from the way she told it, it was presented like nbd too. she said everyone was running in and out of the house but the siblings would stop for a second to sign when the parents asked, like they were all putting their names on a joint family christmas card or something. i think the timing/casualness of it all was all by design on jim bob's part, so that no one would question it too much.

Shame on TLC's complicity in it all - they KNOW those kids had no freedom

That would absolutely have been by design. Make it commonplace, no big deal, in a chaotic moment that isn’t conducive to sitting and thinking about it for more than a second

That can literally vary by sentence in a contract - some stuff is hard to obfuscate even in legalese, some’s word salad to all but specific specialists, and all points between.

Ideally, you sign nothing you don’t understand, whether by reading it or via a lawyer. Real world that’s unrealistic, people may not have access to the resources (legal, educational, emotional) they need to be in that position. Particularly someone who’s under the thumb of abusive parents and has been literally raised to be naive. Not that anyone asked me (lol) but my advice to people is still to read it, because blind trust < limited understanding. Even if all that happens is you see the word “birth” somewhere and think “hmm, that’s weird, I don’t get why they’re mentioning that,” at least that’s a flag for you.

But in her situation, I have total sympathy for why she just trusted her father. Which is another reason I think TLC is a pile of dickbags for doing this, because there’s no way they were unaware of the dynamic there

Can she sue him for this? It seems so fucking illegal any way you see it.

I’m not sure. There are various mechanisms to get yourself out of contracts you were unduly pressured to sign, but those are more about getting you out of the obligations
