“Obviously, nothing against the Brits, but we’re living in a really weird time now. I think when people look back on this era of cinema and it’s just all these British actors pretending to be Americans and all these Australian actors pretending to be Americans, it’s like phantoms. Nobody is acting in their own voice ( ... )

I mean tbh I did find it weird that the March Sisters in the latest iteration of Little Women were all played by non-Americans (and you could hear it in Saoirse's accent, I don't know what that was supposed to be but mid-19th century American it was not, and Emma Watson was even worse). Not to gatekeep, but was there really no young American female talent to be found?

With the exception of Gwyneth as Emma and Reese as Becky Sharp decades ago, I don't think we really see the reverse happening, where Americans play classic British literary roles like Lizzie Bennett or Jane Eyre.

yeah theres an argument to be had about the small pool of people Hollywood looks to cast, and even when it looks like they are "expanding" that pool internationally with brits, it tends to be of the posh sort, no? so its still a very selective pool that overlooks the marginalized.

how’s the arts education in the UK and australia? money being put onto the arts at schools in the US is always the first thing to be cut and it has been like that for decades at this point and i feel like part of that must be contributing to this as well

LOL, the arts education in the UK has been decimated... and has always more or less belonged to the rich.

Hmm ia we use a lot of Brits and Australians for roles that could go to Americans. But also you cast Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate lmao.

Isn't that a dig on American actors?

Idk I 100% noticed the same thing, but for a totally different reason. I used to learn English from movies, and I used to purposely avoid everything but American content, because eg. British and Australian and other English accents are impossible for my muscles. But like in the past 5-ish years, I try to watch American content, but suddenly the "BRITISH ACCENT" alert goes off in my brain all the time. I don't know, even Americans keep saying how amazing the British actors' accents are, so I do feel shit for even noticing, I wish I could just not notice.
