After the article of one of recent winners saying they had to start perfuming on the NYC subways again, does anyone truly care about the winners or contestants from these shows? I personally know a few that’s done shows like this and was able to take advantage of the exposure but…what do the winners get now?

Who the hell is still watching these shows??

We both had the same thought. Seriously it's pissing me off that the contestants get almost nothing. They're the whole reason the show exists in the first place.

They supposedly get 250k but half of that is contingent on completing an album so if that doesn’t happen, they’re pretty fucked (in this girl’s case I think she actually had to pay back the label for the songs she recorded) and the record label they sign them to seems pretty terrible. It always seemed like it was better to get second place than first because you can do your own thing more quickly. I think the best thing people can get out of the show now is growing their social media following.

Like The Voice, I guess it’s just all the about the judges (and maybe the terrible auditions at the beginning). They gave up discovering and making a star years ago

I do remember one time Christina straight up told the contestant the actual value of The Voice was the chance to work on their craft with seasoned veterans, which is fair because not everyone gets to collab with Patti LaBelle but it was funny that she didn't even pretend to care if they won or not.

my friend won the X-factor in our country, and what these shows do is basically lock you into a contract with them so you can only make music with them... but then never make music with you. they will get you in the studio to do demos etc so you think things are going somewhere but they don't do anything with them - except have you on to perform it on the next season. most people know this now tho and just go on for exposure but after that it's all about your own personal hustle (unless you win, then you're kinda screwed)

Yep! Those contracts lock you! I think the last guy I sort of knew through mutuals is still in some kind of contract even though he didn’t win…not sure. But I think it was The Voice. Another friend didn’t win the Voice but she got signed to a record deal and is doing performances on news stations and other gigs so she’s definitely hustling.

Anyway, being a singer and hearing all my life “why don’t you audition for those shows??” got old so fast. 😂

I know in the UK, before it got cancelled, X Factor used to make winners churn out albums within like 6 months (so they'd be terrible, generic and have several cover songs on them). They'd always get dropped pretty much immediately after because the album wouldn't do well. I feel like the few who did well were the ones who went down the indie route post-show, and kind of crowdfunded their own careers that way.

i mean you answered your own question.

the voice and idol and other talent shows are ANTM levels of joke. being associated with these shows will hurt your chances at any semblance of a professional career. no serious record label or management wants to sign these contestants and even the winners are silently dropped by their labels because they are completely unmarketable and these companies know it. the shows are just a money laundering schemes at this point. there's next to zero fan fare around the contestants and the viewers are pretty much only tuning in for the celebrity judges which in return brings in hefty advertisement revenue where all the money comes from. i don't think winners don't even get to keep any of the winning prizes because as others have already pointed out, most if not all of it goes to paying back the record label for "investing" in their "careers".

early idol helped set them up for success by debuting the winner's single on the show multiple times (a moment like this for kelly, I believe for fantasia, etc) and then they would have a full decent album out within six months or so

Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, and Ruben Studdard all had their first albums debut at #1

it sucks how the winners now get nothing lol
