Obviously the guy is okay about it since the show is on TV, but there’s something about this that just seems a little bit mean. I don’t know, I am super anti-prank and making innocent, earnest people look foolish, so maybe I’m just overthinking it.

I understand what you mean, but the last episode shows that the production really had good intentions and wasn’t trying to make a fool out of him or anything. If they did something that they realized made him upset, they had a contingency plan to make sure they won him over again. They were really focused on making him step up and be the “hero” of the story instead of the butt of the joke.

He kind of looked like he was gonna cry a few times after the reveal imo, I think a part of him could initially maybe be a tiny bit hurt because he got so close with people there, but at least he still hangs out with everyone!
