We went to see Beau is Afraid on Tuesday, and I have to say, I've never seen anything else like it!

Will most audiences outright hate it?? Yes! For sure. No question. I don't even know who I could possibly recommend it to myself.

But honestly, I liked it a lot, and my husband fucking LOVED it. It's very long, and definitely starts off much stronger than it ends, but I was never bored. My husband and I both noted a lot of improv parallels in it, which may be another reason we were inclined to like it. I don't even know how to review it - like, nothing I write could possibly convey the mood and story accurately - but it's very dark, and also very funny. It's an anxious fever dream in film format. It's maybe a cry for help from Ari Aster?? Idk man. The supporting cast - Nathan Lane, Amy Ryan, Parker Posey, Patti LuPone, Stephen McKinley Henderson - were all stellar.

Happy to answer questions, but I will reiterate, this movie is not for everyone. And when I say that, I mean most people! Can't believe they let him make this movie, lol. I am torn between having no desire to watch it again and knowing that a rewatch would be extremely rewarding.

This afternoon is my last chance to see a couple of movies at my local AMC, so I might go check one of those out. Otherwise I'll have to go to a smaller theater and pay money... the audacity.

Hoping to see Carmen and Chevalier in the next week! Maybe Renfield if we get around to it.
