The book is cutesy but basically a history version of Night Circus: cute and pretty and empty.

I feel like there's an undercurrent of legit deep shit that's not approachable enough and therefore "not for the crowd" but the Top Ten Piles in book stores are definitely Vapid & Vapider.

pretty much. and i don't think there's anything wrong with wanting ~lighter reading, i do it myself, i just think it's interesting what books get the most traction, why, how etc

I've been noticing this trend for a few years now. I think it's partly a reaction to the pandemic/current state of the world (readers wanting something lighter and escapist), but also partly because booktok has a lot of influence and unfortunately gen Z doesn't seem to know how to read books that actually make you think.

Yeah, it was my first TJR book and I only read it because people went on and on about it. It was okay, very readable, but nothing memorable, and the twist was obvious pretty early on so I was just waiting and waiting for that reveal.

Since then I’ve read a couple more her books and eh. I’m not getting the hype. At least she’s not trying to sell abusive relationships as romantic like someone else TIkTok has waaaay overhyped, I guess.

Yeah, it's all very flimsy but nothing offensive, as far as I can remember.

The amount of the book industry that’s just Colleen Hoover now is very depressing. People just aren’t buying any other books.

Verity is the worst thing I've ever read in my life (well, maybe tied with A Little Life)

Yeah this was my only book I read by her and it was....fine? Like i read it fast, but i hated the journalist character and found the framing a bit too twee. I dont really need to read another kne of her books, just not my thing

Really showed how world-building needs a bit of a plot to go with it as well.
