ETA: I'm realizing my language wasn't clear- I was selected, and sat thru the entire trial, with the belief that I would be deliberating. The judge revealed two of us as alternates at the end, because he wanted our full attention. He said that telling people they are alternates at the beginning has resulted in them not listening or taking notes during the trial.

That was a question I was asked after speaking about being a witness to an assault as a child, and I said I could be fair, and I was chosen. Everyone- barring some misogynistic man who was dismissed due to age, nevermind his attitude- discussed having some experience with it, because that's the World we live in, so it'd have been nigh impossible to cut everyone. There were only a couple women I can remember being like "absolutely could not be impartial, absolutely want no part of this case," and one man who claimed to have been a victim of false accusations that didn't make it. Given the climate, they were actually especially concerned with our attitudes towards cops, and if we'd trust their testimony.

yea, its common practice to NOT tell which juror is an alternate (because they wouldnt pay attention or try to duck out, so they wait til the end. Rightfully so tbh).
