Where was he getting food?

What the fuck was going on with the warm patch of ground? I have to assume that was where Javi was living, but like uh what exactly is under there that he was able to stay warm and get food for however many months? 2 months? maybe it's 3 months now.

I liked the theory that it's an underground hot spring, but i dont see how that would keep Javi alive so there must be something else underground. A bunker maybe with canned food? But even then, the canned food in the cabin was rotted so...?

Edited to add: Someone on the subreddit suggested Javi is the one stealing bear meat so that could be how he's still alive.

Javi being the bear meat thief makes sense. There doesn’t seem a more logical explanation as to how an unarmed city boy could survive in the wilderness during winter (since he couldn’t forage or hunt).

But if he’s been stealing bear meat all this time to survive, that means he has been sneaking back to the cabin and deliberately hiding his presence from his brother for months, which just seems cruel.

He seemed really dazed/out of it so I wonder if he’s weak from hunger or if there’s something more going on with him (I would prefer the show stay grounded in reality and not chalk up everything to ~magic but I could see the show making him somehow connected to the tree symbols (and whatever keeps drawing Taissa to them) after being out in the woods by himself for so long.

I think the shrooms really messed him up, plus seeing the girls literally trying to hunt his brother. There have been a number of cases where drugs can trigger latent mental illness in people with a family history. A lot of people don't want to talk about that because drugs have been so overly demonized, but it happens. That could be something they explore with Javi.

I've really enjoyed how this show has given mostly everything supernatural and logical reasoning so you can lean whichever way you prefer. I hope they don't commit either way in the end. Leave it ambiguous.

Ha, I should have rewatched S1 before S2 began because I totally forgot that all those mushrooms got put into the dinner pot at the end of S1! Who knows how much that ultimately affected him?

From a realistic/non-magical point of view, I thought maybe the combination of cold, hungry, and not speaking to anyone for three months could explain his dazed and nonverbal state. I’m guessing PTSD from the plane crash and his dad dying didn’t help matters.

Right? I was 100% convinced for a minute that Nat found Javi frozen in the lake. I never thought they were going to find him alive

Now I'm fascinated tho!! Javi is alive so:

a) has he been stealing from the camp but refused to come back?

ETA: it just occurred to me that Javi has no idea what happened to Jackie - and if he made it back to camp the next day to find her dead body in the meat shed with a giant bear corpse maybe he thought they murdered her??? so he has refused to come back and live in Murder Cabin 😂

b) he has been living in an underground bunker or tunnel
c) he is mega traumatized, never speaks again, and the supernatural faction considers him touched by The Wilderness like he sprung out of a fairy ring 😂

Well it's the magic of the forest, of course. Also noticed how he seemed shell shocked and like he didn't recognize anyone? Sure it could be trauma but my guess is that it will be some kind of thing like he's...not exactly possessed but changed. Definitely not the same Javi.
