I thought the first two cold opens were really meh [Spoiler (click to open)]like oh of course Esther is Lorelai Gilmore but a genius version of her who can say fuck! and the Midge thing in episode two felt way too Forrest Gump. the Ethan scenes in episode 3 did make me cry, just the way that they both look at each other, unable to understand but loving so much. it was so human and tender, so unlike anything the show has ever done with either of Midge’s kids. idk that’s always been my least favorite part of Midge, how she treats her kids, it’s always hard to watch... )

Esther reminded me more of April in Gilmore Girls. In fact I almost thought it was the same actress.

the hating your mom thing is a Lorelai special but I guess you’re right with the April comparisons. not as annoying though (sorry to the actress who plays April, she was just a kid and gets so much hate but the writing for April did her no favors)

I don't think it's a Lorelai special per se. I think ASP likes interpreting mother-daughter relationships in a way where they are similarly strong personalities with opposed priorities/values lol

Funnily enough I think her most famous mother-daughter pair in Lorelai and Rory lacks that because she tried to make them similar/the same and it ended up with Rory being kinda weak willed and passive opposed to Lorelai. Emily and Lorelai though..

Ia with you in that Esther is most analogous to April. April is bright and comes on strong and intense and.. Err... Lacks the kind of... Attractive to men trappings that would make us view her as a romantic lead in her own story kind of... Idk how to put it exactly but Lorelai/Midge/Rory and I'd even say Rose and Emily in a more traditional Conservative way are framed as very aggressively feminine in a way that is palatable to the main stream. Esther and April despite being portrayed by conventionally attractive actresses don't quite fit that mold IMO

One thing I noticed is that Esther says that the only person she can talk to is 'grandpa' but wouldn't she also find Noah relatable since he is also super smart. I'd argue he's even smarter since the CIA recruited him.
