This won't work in 2023 because the whole conceit, that only Mulder saw the x-file and Scully always missed it, can't work with the technology we now have at our fingertips. cell phones are everywhere. people would be filming the Jersey Devil and Bigfoot and uploading it to tik tok with some lady gaga playing in the background.

Also conspiracies are now a right wing tool. Would the lone gunmen watch Alex Jones if they had existed in the '20s?

I loved this show but it belongs in the 90s.

I wonder if it would work by only visiting obscure places or only having older people be victims. I'd like to say it wouldn't work but the first few seasons of Supernatural did the whole monster of the week well

I think they could actually do better if they set it a few years in the future where AI and deepfakes are so prominent that you need to send real people out to investigate these things.

MTE. as an actual old who loved The X Files when I was in high school, I've realized I can't even rewatch much of it because conspiracies = no fun anymore.

It makes me so sad that idiots have ruined fun conspiracy theories

All of this. I was a huge fan of the original and very excited for the revival but I just couldn’t even finish watching it. I’m not from the US so haven’t experienced the cultural shift on a personal level… but it felt like they were sometimes on the wrong side in the reboot. Does that make sense?

The only truly enjoyable episode was the Rhys Darby one that parodied the whole thing. I can still enjoy the old episodes but perhaps only thru the lens of having lived during that period.

It truly was a product of its time and I can still enjoy it that way (plus the thing that makes it work is Scully and Mulder). But the revival showed how much of a minefield this has become. You would have to draw clear lines between the silly harmless alien/monsters/etc stuff and the now really really dangerous far-right nonsense.

Also, keep CC away lol

The conspiracy thing was definitely something I picked up when we did a recent rewatch. Also there's an episode where there's a bunch of angry townspeople in like New Hampshire coming after a town doctor that they think is a Satanist, walking down the street with guns. Scully tells them it's a crime to have firearms in public and I was like "this is the most unrealistic part of the whole damn show".
