March 21, 2023 Martin Gore says they had never written songs with anyone outside the band, ever.
In April 2020, Richard had reached out to say, hey, we should write some songs together. He wrote some songs, Martin added the music, and they went back and forth.
They did 7 songs together, and dropped 1. They said the songs were too good to be a side project, and so Depeche Mode put them on their new album. He emphasizes that Richard was not going to join the band. (This OP would have died and gone to heaven, tbh.)
One of those songs was their new single, Ghosts Again.
Dave Gahan's reaction?
“Martin sent me about six songs, and Richard Butler was singing on a few of them,” he recalled. “I was like, ‘…The fuck is this?’ Then Martin explained that during COVID he and Richard had written some songs together. I don’t care who wrote them, but they were some great songs.”
