i have recently found out that ghostwriting fiction is a thing and it pissed me off beyond belief

It irritates me so much. Autobiographies are fine, it's still your memories and somebody's effectively putting them in order and tidying your grammar for you. But fiction? The whole fucking point is it's got to be your voice.

Ghostwriting has existed for the longest time, people like to think it's a celeb game but it's really not. I remember when I first wanted to get into publishing (pre the self publish age) you'd have these big publishers hire editors that basically rewrote novels due to coherency issues. Some editors only look at grammar/punctuation but some would basically rewrite the novel

Right? Pretty much any time you've seen an extensive series of novels.... they're ghostwritten.

Same, as someone who LOVES writing, I could never envision having someone else write my ideas.

its just mindboggling that its ghostwriting and not... cowriting? like why does someone get all the credit if all their contribution is a couple of characters and a vague idea?

I hate it so much! How can you go around and pretend you authored a book you didn't actually write?! Ughhhh.

My first knowledge of ghost writing was the VC Andrews written after her death. But I guess I should begrudgingly give her family credit for being honest and including a page in the front of the book that said they had a ghost writer finish writing her stories after she died.

I later found out that there were entire book series that were ghost written and I was like WHAAAT?! What do you mean that Ann L. Martin didn't write every single book of the Baby-Sitters Club? It was shocking to my little brain.
