WOC and Best Actress Nominations at the Academy Awards

Mar 15, 2023 16:48

It is honestly fairly shocking that after Michelle Yeoh's recent Best Actress win, only two WOC have won Best Actress at the Academy Awards. This is a look at the women who have been nominated for the award (still bleak).

Sandra Bullock winning over Gabourey Sidebe is a crime against humanity. I will forever be bitter about this.

I still haven’t seen Precious but I believe you. She beat Helen Mirren too.

Atrocious. Literally any other choice that year would have been better than the barely Lifetime-quality Blind Side.

I think they really needed a better campaign. The focus was so much on Mo'Nique. I remember watching an interview after the Oscars and wondering why they didn't have Gabby out everywhere before voting. I'm sure a lot of people just assumed since she was new to acting that her personality was the same as Precious, but she was so bubbly and happy and cheerful.

That whole thing was such a mess!! The way they treated Mo'Nique for not giving free labor was atrocious. I would read an entire book about the whole debacle that award season was!

gabourey is ADORABLE and it is a travesty that so many people don't know how sweet and funny she is

There were straight up old white guys asking if Gabourey and her kids were ok now, believing that Precious was a real story about her life. It was WILD.

Award shows LOVE white savior films that use real history of Black and PoC struggls as a vehicle to promote their bullshit narrative. Hidden Figures, The Last Samurai, The Help, Mississippi Burning, 12 Years a Slave, Dances With Wolves, Avatar ie Dances With Aliens and that's just from the top of my head.

Edit: oh and of course Green Book

The Blind Side is a TERRIBLE movie, it's like Lifetime movie of the week quality (but worse, tbh)

it's TOTALLY a budget Thirteen (and Thirteen was budget AF but amazing) but so so good. the end where they all clap and her Black Best Friend nods at her in approval is the campiest thing ever.

"Her hair is the size of Texas, and her add is like Canada" I would sit through that horrible lighting for gold like this alone 😂

The amount of white women I see who love that movie and compare themselves to the lady who Sandra played is downright BIZARRE. I've never seen it or read the book but I know the gist and its always weird white christian savior type women who idolize her. They just cant get enough of the idea of white people having to ~save~ POC.
