I doubt Michelle Yeoh's even gotten any sleep yet but we're already looking to the next Oscar race. I did last year's and some were on the mark (EEAAO, Elvis, The Fabelmans, and The Whale for noms/wins), but woof so so many

Barbie is already winning Costume Design and will be an upset if it loses

I don’t think it should win costume design tbh because they already had the designs to go off of, they just had to make them bigger 😂

You could say that about most of the historical fashion wins and most of the wins in general. Originality is actual rare if we really look at it...even Black Panther winning is based of various African fashion. That's probably the most original~ in recent years

There’s a difference between being inspired by a time period/culture and being a carbon copy though, like these outfits are straight copied from the dolls fashions from what I can tell from the trailer. Which is cool and I love it and I can’t wait, but Oscar worthy? Ehhhh I don’t think so

Some of the historical fashion is carbon copy. They go through the books and archives to recreate those same exact looks with some anachronism or exact in there.

Either way I'm looking forward to that nomination and win. They're gonna paint the town BARBIE PINK that night!

"costume design" doesn't mean it's awarded to the most literally "original" and outstanding costume design, it's awarded to how well the costumes in a movie reflect the setting/themes/etc, establishing character through the way they dress, how they reference history and or culture to tell a story et al

so in terms of Barbie's Oscar prospects it would be nominated in regards to how well it translates the "Barbie" aesthetic to live action, not necessarily the specific designs or how original they are compared to source material
