March 13, 2023 * After 21 years, Michelle Yeoh became the second woman of color to win the Oscar for best actress. Previously, Halle Berry addressed racial diversity in Hollywood after winning the award in 2002.
* After about 40 years of acting, Yeoh received awards recognition for her work by winning the award for her performance in "Everything Everywhere All At Once," a part written specifically for her.
* In 2002, Halle Berry, who presented the award to Yeoh, was the first woman of color to win the lead actress award for her performance in "Monster's Ball."
* "This moment is so much bigger than me. This moment is for Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne, Diahann Carroll. It's for the women that stand beside me, Jada Pinkett, Angela Bassett, Vivica Fox," Berry said, acknowledging women of color that have previously been overlooked at the awards. "And it's for every nameless, faceless woman of color that now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened. Thank you. I'm so honored. I'm so honored. And I thank the Academy for choosing me to be the vessel for which His blessing might flow."
