Holmes has been performing in The Wanderers about two sets of Jewish couples living in the present and the 1970s respectively. Holmes plays a Hollywood star who begins an email correspondance with a writer who falls in love with her (she does not reciprocate). Sound familiar?

The contemporary plot seems to be based on Jonathan Safran Foer's obsession with Natalie Portman. ICYMI Foer was married to fellow literary superstar Nicole Krauss. In 2016 he and Portman published their email correspondance in the New York Times where they talked about veganism and philosophy. When Foer's marriage broke up in 2014 it was rumoured that he left his wife for Portman, who then revealed she didn't feel the same way (she has been with her husband since the filming of Black Swan).

No one appears to have noticed the fact that the play is based on the Foer mess until the Jewish Telgraphic Agency put it together and interviewed the playwright, Anna Ziegler, who confessed she did base her play on them:

“In the summer of 2016, when I was writing, Natalie Portman and Jonathan Safran Foer were writing to each other in a correspondence they published in the New York Times. She was promoting a new movie of hers, and I guess they had a previous relationship - that sparked the idea for one of the storylines in the play.

We haven’t really been talking about [Safran Foer and Portman] as one of the inspirations, and not many people have raised it. I assumed that that resonance would be there for a certain percentage of the audience but, to be honest, I don’t think it’s there for the vast majority of people.”
