Good for her for telling her story and expressing her struggles. I’m happy that she’s in a better place.

I’ve been toying with the idea of cutting out alcohol from my life. I only drink on weekends with friends but the older I get the more alcohol makes me feel like shiiiit the next day, sometimes even with just three drinks. I’m also tired of how much money I spend when I go out. I really enjoy nightlife though and I’m curious how to navigate that as someone not drinking. I hate how it seems like every social function I’m at alcohol has to be involved.

I never liked the taste of alcohol. At some point during college, I realized that all the sweet/fruity drinks I ordered were attempts to cover up the taste of alcohol. I finally gave up on trying to achieve that impossible task and just started ordering smoothies, virgin daiquiris, and other non-alcoholic drinks.

There is a certain kind of person who will take offense at anyone who isn’t drinking alcohol. Those people are judgmental assholes so ignore them. But honestly as long as you have a glass in your hand, most people just assume you’re drinking alcohol.

I actually enjoyed going to bars and clubs to socialize and dance more once I accepted that drinking wasn’t for me. I always felt like I was trying to like drinking and failing miserably so I felt freer once I started ordering soda or lemonade. I spent most of my 20s being the only person who wasn’t drinking at bars/clubs and I still had lots of fun so don’t be afraid to give it a try!

You can do it. I think it'll be a bit hard at first but if you need something in your hand to sip, maybe opt for a non alcoholic one. Personally, I have a bubble tea on hand to drink but that's just me. I like drinking once in awhile but I don't like the after effect either. I hope that the people you hang out with respect it enough to not make you feel bad too cuz that's also somewhat important when trying to cut out alcohol.

At first I felt like an outsider when I stopped drinking, but now I just can't imagine drinking again. When I first started I always had to have some sort of alcoholic-looking form of water in my hand to feel like I fit in. Eg. just a few slices of lime and lemon with some ice make water look like it's some vodka-based drink or whatever. Or lots of mint. To this day I still grab a wine or champagne glass at work events, and then fill it with water or whatever. Now, if you don't have the additional problem of simply not enjoying soda or fruit juices like I have, you'll have TONS of options. Loads of mocktails and all. The only soda-passing thing I like is kombucha, so for me it's only water that's an option at many bars. lol ( ... )

Omg, not liking alcohol AND soda is the worst, you basically can't have any mocktails. I'd love to try one but every time I scan the ingredient list it's like... yeah, no, won't like that either.

Yeah, that sucks. I forgot to add, but "lemonade without syrup" I also tend to like. (As in actual lemonade, not some soda-based version.) That's easy enough to make, too.

Lately I make some more elaborate stuff at home. The recipe book is coming (in 10+ years lol). Just layering carrot juice and grapefruit juice (mixed with a bit of water), squeezing in some ginger... With a mini grapefruit wedge. lol I know people who still drink alcohol and soda would probably hate it. But it looked like some beautiful sunset. And tasted amazing to me. (Next time I'll try layering a miniscule amount of beetroot, see if it adds to the sunset effect or not.)

That's basically why I stopped drinking. I was always just a weekend drinker and then as I got older and went out less I drank even less frequently. And then it got to a point that having a few cocktails made me feel like shit (back in the day I could easily down like 10 shots a night) and it's just not worth it to me to feel so shitty. Especially when weed exists and is a way better experience, imo.

I also wish that mocktails were a bigger thing. Cause I love a fruity little cocktail, just give me something without alcohol.

I love Shirley Temples sooo much and cave and quietly order them at events sometimes. I wish they didn't have a child connotation because they are the best.

I love Shirley Temples too! It made me feel like such a sophisticated six year old on the rare occasions that my parents would let me order one at a restaurant. I still order them sometimes because at this point, IDGAF.

I'll order a cocktail at a restaurant or something, but it's honestly probably less than once a month that I drink. I've never been a big alcohol drinker though.
