Hmm I feel for her cause I did hear that some in the Asian community thought that her character was stereotypical. I haven't seen it or am Asian so I can't say.

iirc Asian-American activists complained that she had a stereotypical accent in Downsizing while she said that she felt she was honoring her immigrant parents’ accent. the backlash got bad enough that she missed out on an Oscar nomination even though she had a lot of precursor nominations. i felt so bad for her at the time, that the backlash directly led to an Asian-American actress missing out on a first and potentially life-changing nomination. so happy she didn’t have to wait too much longer after that controversy to get her first nomination!

Wow I knew nothing of this.
That said, the movie just wasn’t good. It’s almost two different films mushed together.

This is SOOOOOO real. I'm glad someone has finally said it.

Asia is not ONE BIG country. It's a continent made up of many countries with its own diaspora. Southeast Asians (like Hong Chau who is Viet) have been looked down a lot from other East Asian countries so ya know... southeast asians are gonna have a different experience than other asians.

(it reminds me of the jungle asian joke ali wong has. i like ali but that was a shitty joke.)
