Lol I keep seeing TikTok’s on how the Brits are always obsessed with calling Americans dumb and that we don’t know geography, but they’re just as dumb. I doubt they know where Wyoming is!

it's contagious too. i have a couple aunts who have lived in italy for decades and the way the one that lives in northern italy talks about the one that lives in southern italy....... like she's your SISTER and NEITHER OF YOU ARE ITALIAN.

Considering that Great Cooking Bakeoff or whatever show where everyone, from the judges to the contestants, didn't know shit about Mexican food they don't really have a ton of exposure to Mexican culture or food.

I seriously met a British person who didn’t know who Martin Luther King was and another French person who insisted he was the first black President of the US

It’s no excuse really, but we are taught very little American history at school (although I remember we had a module of the Civil War and they let us watch Dances with Wolves lol), it’s a lot more about UK centric stuff (the Royal family, WWII etc). If Martin Luther King was mentioned when I was at school, it must have only been in passing because I don’t remember it, but it might - hopefully - be different now given that was over 20 years ago.

But how relevant is Martin Luther King to brits or people from other nationalities? Genuinely asking, because while I know he’s very relevant to the american civil rights movement, in a global scale I thought he didn’t held the same weight.

I’m from south america (and a POC) but I wasn’t taught about him at school and only learned through television and, later on, while educating myself about civil rights movements worldwide. So I don’t think it’s that weird that they don’t know about MLK, but I might be wrong.

Ok, I know who he was because of internet and movies and I personally like learning more about the US, but many Americans don't even know my country is real lol and I expect to answer where it's located every time and sometimes that 'No, it's not Russia'. Like, we're not significant on the World stage and I'm not offended when people outside of Europe don't know a single fact about us, that's normal, but we're expected to know America's historical figures and not be ignorant of all America's historical events from the moment it was founded, that's a bit unfair.

lol I had someone tell me England was better than America because they could explore different cultures, weather, food next door and the flights were cheap and the US couldn’t do that 🤣
