Although it became common knowledge a few years ago that Dolly Parton was a producer of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this is the first time that Sarah Michelle Gellar (or anyone from the show?) has commented on it publicly. SMG said that in the early years of the show, Dolly would send Christmas gifts but she never visited the set so Sarah assumed that Dolly had no idea who she was.
Background: in 1986, Dolly Parton and her former manager Sandy Gallin founded Sandollar Productions (the name is a combination of SANdy Gallin and DOLly PARton). The company produced the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie in 1992. A few years later, Sandollar executive Gail Berman adapted it into a tv show. Berman and Gallin are both credited as producers of both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, and Sandollar is listed in the end credits of every episode. Dolly Parton is not credited as a producer or listed in any of the credits, but she and Buffy share a birthday (well, one of Buffy's birthdays). In the 90s, Dolly learned that Gail Berman was receiving less royalty money from Buffy than her male colleagues at Sandollar. Dolly took her to lunch and handed her a check.
Sandollar also produced the 1994 Margaret Cho tv series All-American Girl (the first primetime sitcom about an Asian American family), the 1991 Steve Martin version of Father of the Bride, Noah Baumbach's 1995 movie Kicking and Screaming, the 1995 remake of Sabrina starring Harrison Ford, the 1996 movie Fly Away Home, and the 1989 documentary about the AIDS memorial quilt, Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt, which won an Academy Award for best documentary feature.
