Will absolutely watch Who Invited Charlie when it ends up streaming somewhere, Pally cracks me up.
Recent watches have all been Independent Spirit Award nominees:
The Cathedral: This was... something! Dubbed "experimental", and while I would agree with that, it also felt amateur in a lot of ways. I appreciated what the filmmaker was trying to do - show us a unique take on an autobiographical story from a removed, dispassionate perspective - but the execution was lacking. I will say, the hair, clothes, toys, decor and commercials from the 80's and early 90's really brought me back to that time in a way few other period pieces do, because he had so many lingering shots where all you could do was focus on what was onscreen.
All That Breathes: Way too many close-up shots of gross stuff for my taste (rats, spiders, unidentified meat bits), but I liked the doc overall. Every time they just picked a bird up and flipped it over I was like :O, literally did not know you could manhandle (for a good reason in this case) birds so easily. I really admire those men for doing something even though it has to feel like swimming upstream. I think it was missing something, but I was happy it wasn't as polished and commercial as a lot of docs are now.
Marcel the Shell with Shoes On: This was sweet and enjoyable, would recommend if you're in a mood for something wholesome. I did cry, but not as much as I was expecting to, so that's good. I wonder if it was weird for Jenny and her ex to have to spend so much time together filming + promoting.
Still have plenty of Indie Spirit & Oscar things to watch, so I will probably be doing some of that this weekend.
