I think I was in the 3rd grade when it debuted. You were bad ass if your parents let you wear a Bart Simpson shirt to school because the show was so ~scandalous when it came out.

I don't watch Family Guy but I think Bob and Homer aren't blue collar (those tend to be physical labor jobs)? iirc Homer is a nuclear engineer (cushy white collar office job, he actually makes a lot of money) and Bob owns his own business even if he's struggling. I think it's just an all-American and particularly a Dad look - and those blue check shirts they also love are too hard to animate lol.
