Derek sacrifices himself at the end to help kill the Nogistune.
Creator Jeff Davis said he did it because "You don't want to do a movie and say, 'Well that could've just been another episode of the show.' You want to make it feel grand." However he added that "It's Teen Wolf. People can always come back."
He got Tyler Hoechlin’s blessing beforehand (Hoechlin was also the executive producer of the movie).
As for Stiles’s absence, Lydia says she broke up with him because she kept on having premonitions that if they stayed together they would be in a car accident that would kill him.
