My friend has diabetes and she can't get the meds that help her A1C stay low because everyone is using it to lose weight. It's really fucked up.

There’s a global shortage - I’ve read several articles about it in Australian news in the past month or so.

There’s a vegan guy who’s some kind of doctor (maybe not MD? I dunno) I follow on Instagram who’s usually super sensible about stuff and he made a story the other day talking about how great it was that people could take Ozempic to lose weight and it really soured me on him. I mean, I get that people with obesity need help, but people with diabetes need this stuff to STAY ALIVE, and most of the ones taking it for weight loss and causing the shortage seem to not even be in any kind of life threatening stage of obesity - they just want to lose 10kg so they can fit into a smaller size.

Oh my fucking God. No people who are diabetic don’t need Ozempic to STAY ALIVE.

This fatphobic lie needs to stop.

Do you genuinally think that diabetics died before 2012?

The ONLY medication that keeps diabetics alive is insulin.

T2 in particular is controlled with diet and exercise. Same as obesity.

Can we stop blaming individuals for this company’s inability to produce the drug in enough measures people need it?

Oh, get off your high horse. I am almost certainly fatter than you are, and it’s not fucking fatphobic to think that a drug for diabetics should be going to diabetics before it goes to celebs, influencers and the various idiots who hang off their every word. It doesn’t mean I don’t want overweight people who need help yo get it, so stop putting words in my mouth.

If there’s no issues with the shortage then why are people bothering to talk about it, and why would people with diabetes be so upset about it? Are they all fatphobic too? Jesus Christ.

Unlikely.

But preventive health care is not a bad thing. Blame Novo for the shortage. Not people having preventive health care given to them.

People with diabeties are upset because an important drug isn’t avaliable because the manufacturers are shit.

There is an issue with a shortage. Novo acknowledges it, and it began when they rolled out Wegovy, which is MEANT for people who are overweight. Weight, the primary cause of diabetes.

People are sensationalizing the shortage with articles around "this is just lazy people who don't want to diet to lose a few pounds" because that is what the news does. The reality is, people being prescribed the name brand drugs (and actually getting their insurance companies to pay for it) are typically obese, and being prescribed the drugs for very legitimate reasons. Most people are not wealthy celebrities who can afford to pay $1800 a month without insurance coverage to lose a few pounds. Certainly not enough people to drive a global shortage. People who are using it to lose a few pounds are taking the generic semaglutide, which has no shortage. And is likely what Chelsea was taking, based on her description.

My cousin is on it (for diabetes) and has so much trouble finding it in Australia. He just goes to random pharmacies and gets lucky sometimes.

Despite losing a ton of weight in recent years (80+ lbs) and being thisclose🤏🏾 to being at a "healthy" BMI, my A1C stubbornly refuses to leave the pre-diabetic range.

My PCP prescribed one of these new meds to help bring it down, but this year several insurance companies (including mine 😡) stopped covering them even for people with pre-diabetes/insulin resistance it due to the shortages.

EXACTLY SAME! I lost 50 pounds and I'm stuck at a 6.0 A1C. It's so irritating!

I tried upping my Metformin but the side effects were not worth it. But I guess I should be happy it came down from the high 8s when I started.

Most insurance companies don't cover (and never covered) Wegovy or Ozempic for weight loss. Because most insurance plans do not have weight loss coverage at all. The drugs are also extremely expensive, and most insurance companies don't want to pay. Even though preventative healthcare is the best route from a health angle.

The insurance companies did not stop covering them because of the shortage. There are regular shortages of all kinds of drugs. Including Adderall currently. That is a problem for the patient. For the insurance company, it just means they don't have to pay for your med, since you can't get it anywhere. No skin off their nose.

You should speak with your doctor about taking generic semaglutide from a compounding pharmacy. The cost is far less expensive, though still pricey at around $300 a month.
