Jeremy Renner Suffered Snowplow Accident While Trying to Save Nephew, Says Sheriff's Office Report https://t.co/LqYEmA2ITh - People (@people) January 25, 2023
It's insane to me that this is apparently a thing people don't do in America? Because the cars are all automatic gearboxes or something? I've never heard of people leaving the car in park without the handbrake. The idea of leaving your car without the handbrake on is as if you're actively trying to let it roll to me.
yeah idk why it's not commonplace here. but my dad is English (and also primarily a manual shift driver) and he passed the parking brake habit on to me.
i wonder if part of it is that here it's often called the e-brake or emergency brake so people think it's an 'in case of emergency' thing?
Yes perhaps that's part of it. Here you would instantly fail any driving test or review if you didn't put your handbrake on when you were in park - it would be considered not knowing something so basic about a car you shouldn't even be in the driver's seat.
We have to show where the brake is and engage it during the pre portion of the test when we're showing that we know the parts of the car. But they don't care if you use it when you park after the test.
To people who don't, imagine a kid playing in front of your parked car when there's a mechanical issue and the kid gets run over. Cars are unpredictable sometimes, and it's so stupid to not use an emergency brake. Drives me mad that people can be that selfish. If you don't wear a seat belt, you yourself suffer, but if you don't use the handbrake, that could kill someone else.
I don't understand how a car that is parked on a flat, level surface is suddenly going to start moving and hit a child, dog or grownup. On a hill or incline, yes.
Because putting the car in park is not putting a brake on. A different mechanism is used to stop the car that locks up the gears, not a brake.
'Constant use of only the parking pawl, especially when parking on a steep incline, means that driveline components, and transmission internals, are kept constantly under stress, and can cause wear and eventual failure of the parking pawl or transmission linkage.'
You're not putting a brake on when you just leave it in park, and the gears could fail and roll and hit someone. People have died this way.
Thank you! Yesss, I'm like, wtf it takes 2 seconds to put on the brake, just do it. If someone leans on it, strong winds in hurricane territory, you get rear ended while stationary. Shit is unpredictable.
Yes and cars are so heavy that once they get some forward momentum they will roll and be impossible to stop. A road that looks flat from a quick glance will almost always have some level of incline to it - people shouldn't rely on their own judgement here when there is such an easy fail safe. It is literally built into the car! You just pull the lever 10 centimetres and you're done!
It literally takes half a second to do and doesn't cause any harm to anyone, so just do it! Make it part of your driving habits.
