Ugh same. I hate how he's hailed as genius when he's basically the gaming version of Ryan Murphy. Good ideas but needs heavy editing or else shit just goes off the rails and just doesn't make sense. Death Stranding was basically back to back fetch and delivery quests.

Oh I don't have any special tea on Kojima, but from a cursory look at his ~oeuvre~ his writing is god awful (just take a look at the sexist characterization of Quiet from MGS or any dialog from Death Stranding). But all his storylines are incredibly convoluted and he likes to pretend it's high brow by sprinkling in random high culture references or cameos from European actors so fans are somehow brainwashed into believing it's his special brand of quirky intellectual genius. He's like the pinnacle of dude who took one quarter of Film Studies. No doubt, he's definitely a seminal figure when it comes to game design and I appreciate that he at least tries to think outside the box, but he should leave the writing to the professionals. And his deluded sycophants are obnoxious af. Though I do enjoy that Kojima brand of camp here and there, ngl.

Of course! And same! Indie games are really where it's at, especially now that I don't have the free time or patience to put up with long overwrought cutscenes (looking at you Kojima). You can find more interesting games at a lower price point without the AAA bs. Though admittedly they're probably even more disposed to auteur bigheadedness a la Kojima, just less publicized.

not OC but: Kojima's primarily known for the stealth series Metal Gear Solid (which ended back in 2015 and is notoriously kind of difficult to play from start to finish bc Konami sucks and the games aren't widely available on modern hardware). his name was and still sort of is basically royalty among videogame nerd men because he's one of the ~auteurs in the field but I think he majorly hurt his cred with the release of Death Stranding lol. it was a highly polarizing release, partly because it was mega-hyped into oblivion -- Kojima's first post-Konami post-MGS series game with Hollywood actors and obscure trailers -- and partly because I think the story of it just utterly failed to capture a large berth of people the way MGS did. the character writing was poor, the gameplay itself received a lot of criticism (though I've also seen praise for it so YMMV), the manner in which the story is told is extremely lacking (exposition dump hell when MGS was already quite fraught with that

Agreed about Metal Gear Solid....It took my brother forever to get through because the game mechanics were so weird. He is even asked for my help a few times and it isn't even my thing. It was lot of trial and error if I remember. I can see why people would drop it if they aren't invested.
