Casting has been announced for the revival of The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window by Tony nominated playwright Lorraine Hansberry, who wrote A Raisin in the Sun (the first play by an African-American woman to be produced on Broadway). Oscar Isaac (Scenes from a Marriage, Hamlet, Star Wars) and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Dead for a Dollar, Othello) star in a sweeping drama of identity, idealism, and love. This production marks the first major New York revival since the original Broadway run. Previews begin on February 4 and opening night is February 23.
Nepo babies Gus Birney and Julian De Niro are also in the cast. Gus (23) is the daughter of Reed Birney, a Tony award winning actor who you probably know as Vice President Donald Blythe on House of Cards (or his many guest starring roles on other shows in the past few decades) and Constance Schulman, best known for her role as Yoga Jones on Orange is the New Black. One of Gus's first jobs was a Clean and Clear ad when she was 14. She then began modeling for designers including Kanye West and Vivianne Hu. She dropped out of school at age 16 when she was cast in The Mist. Her brother Ephraim is also an actor and has guest starred on Gotham and The Americans. Julian De Niro (27) is the son of actor Robert de Niro. He previously played young Barack Obama on The First Lady (the series best known for Viola Davis' lip acting in her portrayal of Michelle Obama).
Lorraine Hansberry invites us into Greenwich Village in the 60s, crafting a razor-sharp portrait of a diverse group of friends whose progressive dreams can’t quite match reality. At the center are Sidney and Iris Brustein, fighting to see if their marriage - with all its crackling wit, passion, and petty cruelty - can survive Sidney’s ideals. As if reaching across the decades, Hansberry’s incisive final work offers shockingly contemporary provocations.
