• Rumors started floating around late last year that Boygenius (the supergroup made up of indie darlings Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers) was gearing up to release another record, and only got stronger after it was announced that the band was playing Coachella. Today they officially announced their return and released three new singles.

• The album, titled The Record, is a full length follow up to their 2018 self-titled EP and is set to release on March 31.

• The band released three new singles, each led and written by a member of the group. "True Blue" was written by Lucy Dacus while Julien Baker wrote and leads the song "$20". Phoebe Bridgers wrote and leads the song "Emily I'm Sorry" and according to Bridgers was the first one she sent to Dacus and Baker after the release of her 2020 album Punisher. Bridgers says she sent the song with a message asking the two, "Can we be a band again?"

• The album is available for pre-order through their website with three variants available. Target will have an orange variant and the UK is getting a white variant via Rough Trade.

According to Matt Berninger the album was apparently born from, "a very dark spot where I couldn't come up with lyrics or melodies at all. Even though we'd always been anxious whenever we were working on a record, this was the first time it ever felt like things really come to an end." He says the band, "managed to come back together and approach everything from a different angle, and because of that we arrived at what feels like a new era for the band."

• The first single off the album, "Tropic Morning News" is, "a song about having a hard time expressing yourself, and trying to connect with someone when the noise of the world is drowning out any potential for conversation.”

• Band member and producer Aaron Dessner says: "When Matt came in with that song in the depths of his depression, it felt like a turning point for us. It’s almost Dylan-esque in its lyrics and it’s so much fun to play; everything suddenly felt like it was coming alive again.”

• Sufjan Stevens has worked with the band before, most notably appearing as an instrumentalist on their breakout album, Boxer. During the pandemic Taylor Swift and Aaron Dessner began a partnership that extended to The National appearing on her album, Evermore. Phoebe Bridgers has worked with Dessner, but also worked with Matt Berninger before first on the 2019 song "Walking on a String" and later on her 2019 Christmas release, a cover of the song "7 O'Clock News/Silent Night"

• The National will also embark on an international tour in support of the album. Soccer Mommy, The Beths and Bartees Strange were announced as support acts while Patti Smith is scheduled to appear as a special guest at their New York City show.
