It depends. My ex boyfriend and I were together for 4+ years and we are still friends, I would have no problem referring to him as that and he'd do the same for me. If you just say "ex" it sounds like the person is out of your life and that's it... IDK, I think it's very personal.

I don't think I've ever referred to him as my "ex" I literally always just say my hs bf LMAO He's the only one I've ever had anyways. Otherwise I just refer to him as my friend cos he is.

Same, my ex-husband and I are still friends and I wouldn’t hesitate to refer to him as such in mixed company. I feel like we’ve both grown and changed as people to the point where I forget that we used to be married. Also, it can be awkward to bring that up if we’re in mixed company - people can get weird when they find out about exes being friends and as far as I’m concerned, my dating history is on a need-to-know basis.
