Good for her for being sober <3

And I hope this doesn't come across weird but I'm always surprised there aren't more alcoholics in the world bc alcohol is so insanely normalized and perhaps the one drug people will openly encourage you to try at all costs. I went out with some friends last night and one of their dates didn't drink, which suddenly became a fucking topic to the point I had to put on my bitch hat and yell for them to stop making an issue out of it. Idk how people, even supposedly smart/nice ones, think it's no big deal to pressure someone into drinking. Have your fucking drink and let people drink whatever they want, jesus.

I'm sure there are a lot more alcoholics out there, they just don't realize/admit it.

I always thought that attitude you mention would die out after hs after we matured but it still happens so often. People are genuinely surprised if you don't drink and think there'something wrong or that you're boring. It's ridiculous.

I would lie and say I have that gene mutation that doesn't let alcohol break down in my body.

Yup, there were three non drinkers after high school in my social circle and now there's just me. The other one did a wine crash course because she got tired of having to deal with the shit she was given constantly. My coworkers and friends insists it's their goal to get me drunk on any outings. Kind of horrifying their goal is to sneak things into my drink and it's something they treat as a fun game or joke. Any other context, that would be skeevy.

Ftr, alcoholism runs on both sides of my family. I have an "addictive" personality and unresolved issues. The chances of me being one and done or drinking in moderation is not high.

i was ALWAYS pressured to drink...and I honestly just didn't care for alcohol that much. And even after one drink, it would just make me tired and headachey..so i don't know why people would want to see me drunk so much. I would just pick up random empty drinks and pose in pictures with them, and say random movie quotes, and people thought I was drunk lol. I think that's why i took on the photographer role at parties..so my hands were full, and people were too busy asking for pix, too bother me to drink.

Oh girl, there are so many functioning alcoholics out there. Those who are aware and others who won't admit it because it hits too close to home.

It's very daunting how normal alcohol is, especially during Christmas time. The amount of liquor I was gifted with at work is insane.

I just finished a documentary about Korsakov Syndrome and you've got thirty year olds walking around like they've got alzheimers. We know how bad alcohol is, but it's ~~fun!

Oh God, "wet brain." I would see those folks in AA and it was so sad. They never made any sense while trying to talk, and I didn't understand what was going on until someone explained to me that they're not still drinking, but it's over for them in many ways 😢

I wish it was better known that you can get it from anorexia/EDs as well. That scares me as these misogynistic and toxic aughts skinniness trends go on.

Lack of vitamin B, crap diet and solely alcohol intake.

Do you have a link or further information to the documentary? I'd like to check it out.

It's Dutch, so I don't know if it is of use for you. It's about a clinic/care home for korsakov patients.

She’s doing a little better but she’s still…not all there. It’s such a sad thing to see.

The circles their thoughts move in and how short the memory span is is terrifying to watch.

It REALLY is. When she originally went to the hospital she just kept telling my partner that they were late to visit their mom (who had just died) and my partner was like, “I don’t know if I can stand having to tell her every time I see her that mom is dead” but thankfully she came out of that part. She still has completely fabricated memories, though.
