it's quite hard to explain in a small text box haha bear with me

basically in high school - year 7 to year 9 you have all mandatory lessons.
then from years 10 to 11 - you have a smaller pool of subjects you have to study which includes english, maths and science (and there are some classes that you choose yourself, like extra science or a language) - which is what your gcse's are all on.

but after high school, in college (16-18 y/o) you choose which subjects you learn (ranging from maths, sociology, politics, IT, english literature etc).

so basically maths atm is only compulsory up to GCSE age (16) - there's no reason for it to become compulsory to the age of 18.

the system is kinda similiar in germany, but certain stuff (math, german, english, at least one science) is compulsory till the end (year 13). i would've loved to drop math, really struggled with it in the last years.

i'm pretty sure slovenia's system was heavily copied from germany's, and i absolutely agree with you.

i used to love math but in year 9 we got a new teacher that sucked big time, and since year 9 had the fundaments for the next 4 years, my math knowledge got screwed over.

The college part sounds really cool bc you can test the waters of what you like first instead of getting stuck into a major track already

So are you essentially done with school at 16?

when you finish high school at 16 you can choose to go to college or do apprenticeships. i think they recently made it compulsory to do those two, so you weren't out in the real world at 16 like you used to.

my issue (i was in school from 2005-2012) is that it's all about getting teenagers to university, it's all about statistics. they want to be the high school with the most kids who went to a good college, then colleges want to be the college with the most kids who went on to uni and get a degree (bc funding). they don't give a shit about you if you want to do an apprenticeship etc.

hopefully it's gotten better since i left but i doubt it. schools only care about you if you have a plan and say you're going to university

afaik college is what they call the last 2 years of your high school education, university is what they call "higher education" and what would be called college in the US.

Honestly, the greatest day of my life was opening up my GCSE results - looking straight at my Maths grade (a C grade) and crying when I realised I never had to do Maths ever again!

I ended up teaching Maths 10 years later but that's besides the point!

OMG same. I originally failed my GCSE Maths (got a D grade) but was able to get a C grade two years later after several goes at different fast track Maths night classes. I still suck at Maths but I'm so glad I never had to do it again. 😅
