He was never going to quit The Witcher JUST for Superman.

If any of this is true, his Witcher exit is much more messy than has been reported.

I don't know how I feel about this. On the one hand, I feel like men can be toxic on set, and I think even with creative differences undermining a showrunner being respectful is a must. At the same time, there seems to have been an apparent clash between what the showrunners want to do and the books themselves. If HC campaigned for The Witcher based on the books/the game's vision of Gerlat ... yeah, I'm not really shocked he would be disappointed and try to re-write things. Especially since they made Geralt a grunting hot boy when he's like a charming character. I've only just started reading (listening to really) the books, and I was initially reluctant because I thought it was going to be the typical they are mad because women and minorities have parts. There is certainly a lot of that as well in the fandom. Still, the show also really oversimplify and lean into these general fantasy tropes, when the series itself is a deconstruction and plays with fairy tales. Plus, they expanded Yennifer, but then had no idea how to write her in ( ... )

Cavill himself is the one who chose to grunt instead of doing his lines. The problem with the fandom imo is they've built up a narrative around him vs. the showrunners that often feels like telephone game with what they pin as his choices (everything that was book-accurate) vs the creative team's (everything that wasn't) when it seems like they were all bringing their own headcanons into the mix.

I think that is a great point. Cause, at the end of the day, we don't know all the details.

I find it so interesting, he said that then because later on, he would talk about wanting to make Geralt "more like the source material," so I wonder what happened? It is frustrating that there are so many blatantly sexist, racist, bros who make content about this because I think the adaptation choices are interesting to discuss without needing to go there.

I wonder about it being a result of the books and games not being one-to-one. HC's talked about being a games-first fan while LSH says she's a fan of the books. They're pulling from multiple sources and IA, it really does provoke an interesting conversation about intertextuality and what makes a faithful adaptation. That potential conversation has kind of been bogged down by those who've focused on the surface-level differences but there are still substantial critiques that can be/have been made too.

The thing of it is, the TV show is an adaptation of the books, and the books only. They don’t have the rights to the games - and the games are not even canon.

Big yikes if true.

TBH I can see how this is one of those "the truth is somewhere in between" situations where HC's motivations might have come from a place of love for the the source material but also that he was a complete a-hole about it. Like, these things can co-exist easily.

Either way this drama is a mess all around. I need more popcorn! lol

I'm drunk and coming back to this post but LOL at folks not believing a man parading a 19-year-old around at 32 and saying he can't talk to women because of metoo is an asshole. The disconnect, y'all are funny
