there was always a right way and wrong way to pull off this look and this just doesn't work for me. maybe if the top wasn't so tight around the hips?

When people were saying "dress" I was picturing something at least knee-length.

I mean, I never ever liked this aesthetic, but ikwym... I think it works best when the shirt/dress has at least a little flare at the bottom.

yeah, right now everything looks like a frumpy, ill fitting mess. the top should be more flared, and it would probably also look better if she were wearing (dare i say it?) skinny jeans that fit up to her ankles so you can see her sneakers in full (and so the top is the "statement" of the outfit like it's probably intended), and a necklace and earrings wouldn't hurt since there's absolutely nothing going on from the shoulder up

Exactly. A dress and jeans doesn't look bad if the dress is fitted more like a loose tunic in the hips.

If the top has to be tight fitting like that, it should not go all the way down to the crotch so it's just 2 legs sticking out of a tight shirt. The length throws the whole thing off.
Also the jeans should have been black or even white or very very light blue. Like.... Why that colour?

Also you can wear sneakers with a sporty dress like...
