I'm not sure what the demographic was for EEAO but I know for myself (eldest daughter in an Asian household), it really hit hard. There are a lot of things I felt when watching the film and it feels like a really personal story for a lot of people who might share a similar background.

That being said, I can understand why it might not resonate with people but-- I am really happy it is a contender.

i’m not asian but i am an eldest daughter with an Intense But Fraught Relationship With My Mom (and i’m puerto rican, so not technically an immigrant, but when we moved to the states my mom was a culturally non-american mom raising an american daughter) and when i tell u EEAAO had me bawling like a damn baby…. did you see turning red? a lot of Thematic Overlap and also turned me into a tears factory lol

I did see Turning Red! I had my issues with it but it definitely resonated with me as well. I cried in both so you're not alone lol

Hopefully the crying wasn't too sad. I know for me, when I cried, it was more of a "I feel seen" type of cry lmao

also not from an asian household, but the only daughter with a strained relationship with my mom. I bawled my fucking eyes out, especially when I saw it by myself. I get that not everyone is going to identify with that, but I have never felt so seen by a movie and it's beautiful and heartbreaking knowing that so many others felt the same way.
