December 13, 2022 Despite live music (and everything else) being negatively impacted by the pandemic for the past several years, the touring industry has come roaring back in 2022. Tours this year made over $6.28 billion dollars, setting a record well over 2019's $5 billion.
- Live Nation claims that 16 tours grossed over 100 million this year.
- Bad Bunny and Elton John were the two biggest touring acts. Bad Bunny's two tours made $393.3 million combined, while Elton John's continuation of his "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour made $274 million. Harry Styles also had a big year, with his tour grossing $160.4 million, putting him in fourth place.
- Ed Sheeran sold 3 million tickets, the only artist to do so in 2022, over 63 shows.
- One of the biggest factors in the large increase in touring revenue this year were the increased receipts from stadium shows. More and more acts are now stadium draws, and there was a pent-up demand for live music.
- Next year looks to be promising, with many of the same acts returning to the road, and hotly anticipated tours from Taylor Swift and (likely) Beyoncé.
- This is all in stark contrast to the smaller acts that couldn't tour or had to cancel tours because of high costs and competition for resources.
