[spoiler]the "choice" is that the family has to decide which one of them is going to be a sacrifice so the world doesn't end, bc the strangers are in a really badly-organized reddit thread/cult. so it's already just misery porn, then it continues for like 500 pages - the strangers kill/"sacrifice" themselves, one of the dads gets a concussion and survives, the daughter dies accidentally, so everyone is sad and also, the world isn't ending and the dads leave in the rain. the end.

but who knows what changes they'll make for the movie. it was just a frustratingly thin, overlong story and now i'm mad all over again lol
