On the season finale of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver discuses a few of the reasons that FIFA should not have been awarded the World Cup to Qatar including:
- rumors that some of the officials who voted for Qatar to host each received $1 million bribes
- journalists being harassed/threatened
- the weather which is so hot that the World Cup was moved to

Anyway, I also looked it up online and it looks like there was no "official" backtracking, just that some people arrived and found that they couldn't get kosher food / didn't feel comfortable praying in public. The Jerusalem post asked Qatari official sources for confirmation and it sounds a bit wishy-washy, like "it should be available but only if X people are there, maybe" and it's probs not a good enough guarantee for those folks who are stricter about needing kosher certified.

EDIT: fwiw my friend and her cowokers are all from the US, they're all Jewish but have an American passport so there's that.
