I was shocked he answered. I was a little flustered and said so and he laughed. I told him that my kid sister met him years back at his concert and she cried from the excitement when she got his autograph. I told him I'd made fun of her for it ever since. He laughed and said I needed to stop picking on her, she clearly had great taste and then asked why I wasn't at the show too. I told him I was sorry to bother him but saw his # and got curious and he said not to apologize, he was glad I'd called. I told him I didn't want to take up more of his time and to have a great day, he told me he already was a great day because the call from me and story about my sister made his day better. Then we hung up.
It was maybe a 2 minute call. I've thought about that often when he and his mom were on their WE reality show and every time he's been in the news in the years since. I genuinely think he was a lovely soul who grew up manipulated and abused by the entertainment industry, taken advantage of and harmed by his parents and manager and brother during his formative years, spending his life trying to make sense of a world he wasn't taught how to navigate, watching the men who harmed him continue to succeed while he struggled. My heart genuinely breaks for the way his story ended.

I don't think I was really around when this happened, but it's nice to hear an ONTD story about that day that's lovely and not a joke. (I do enjoy the good jokes, but you know, I can be a softie, too!)
