He wasn't a total unknown at the time, but I'm guessing that in 2009 he was best known by average Americans for Hackers (1995), Trainspotting (1996), Eli Stone (2008), or being Angelina Jolie's ex. I think he was more well known as a respected actor in the UK at that point (which could help him negotiate a better salary) but he wasn't a household name in the United States just yet.
