Pretty reliable source when it comes to Witcher news, the website Redanian Intelligence, has reported that:
-Cavill start expressing he wanted out during post-production of S2
-Main reason was that he and the producers/writers "weren't seeing eye to eye" when it came to the story and his character
-at the time, Redanian Intelligence claims they did not think it was a credible story, so they sat on it, and Cavill renewed for S3 shortly after

this has been my go-to site for Witcher Netflix news so I am inclined to believe this. Season 2 was truly garbage. Anyway, I have dubbed this drama "Hexit" - get it, the Hexer, Henry, Prince Harry -- it's a triple pun
