October 27, 2022 Paul Mescal is set to star in Oscar winner Kevin Macdonald's upcoming modern spy thriller A Spy By Nature. The film will follow Alec Milius, a disillusioned twenty-something whose gift for deception gets him involved with MI6 and complicates his personal life. The story is adapted from the popular Alec Milius book series by Charles Cumming, with John Hodge taking the first pass at the adaptation and the most recent draft by Joseph Charlton. The film definitely has franchise potential, as this will be an adaption of the first book in a series.
Mescal, who can currently be seen in A24's festival darling Aftersun, has been busy as of late, starring in several films prepping for release next year - Carmen, Foe, and Strangers - as well as being attached to The History of Sound, set to film next year.
"It’s my main personality trait." -Paul Mescal on his love for short shorts

October 25, 2022 N.B.: the full interview is a little spoilery for Aftersun.
- Is currently in London prepping for his turn as Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire.
- Like his character in Aftersun, not a big karaoke guy. Felt very drawn to the character.
- Spent two weeks hanging out with Frankie Corio, the actress who plays his daughter in the film, and had to work to maintain his Scottish accent.
- On making music with girlfriend (fiancé?) Phoebe Bridgers: I feel like I'm too much of a fan to broach the idea of attempting that. I'll leave her to writing amazing songs and I'll just stick to the acting for the time being.
- On short shorts: I maybe should try and collaborate with O'Neill's. The short shorts that I wear, they're actually not short shorts. They're just football shorts that I've worn for my entire life.
- Would be down for a second season of Normal People, but nothing is in the works.
#GothamAwards nominees for outstanding lead performance include Cate Blanchett, Danielle Deadwyler, Dale Dickey, Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser, Paul Mescal, Thandiwe Newton, Aubrey Plaza, Taylor Russell and Michelle Yeoh.

October 25, 2022 Earned a Gotham Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Performance for his role in Aftersun. The film also scored nominations for Best Feature, Best Director (Charlotte Wells) and Best Breakthrough Performer (Frankie Corio).
Rebecca Frecknall thought Paul Mescal was too young to play Stanley Kowalski in her "Streetcar" at the

October 25, 2022 The New York Times also interviewed Mescal.
- Had appendicitis earlier this month, which forced him to slow down and spend a week at home with family.
- Enjoyed shooting the father-daughter sequences in Aftersun, but found shooting the scenes where he was alone much more upsetting because of the character's mental state.
- Though Mescal is a theater veteran, he's still a little apprehensive for his upcoming role in A Streetcar Named Desire, because the stage doesn't take any prisoners. The director initially thought he was too young for the role, but then she realized he was the same age as Marlon Brando in the film adaptation.
- Wants indie films to be his foundation: I just feel protective of how the space for smaller films is shrinking and shrinking. That depresses me. So how do I strike a balance between my political ideations toward the world of film - which is in a very precarious place - versus doing an action film or a spy thriller? (ed. note - lol, I guess he decided could do both!)
