I'm going to see an early screening of Weird tonight. It has a Q&A with the director afterward, which is especially fun for me because he was on an improv team I used to go see religiously prior to COVID, so it will be fun to see him at his real job!
Recent watches:
The Banshees of Inisherin: As a hater of every McDonagh thing I've seen, I very unexpectedly loved this! It's between this and Tar for my favorite film of 2022 right now. I spent literally 50% of the film with tears just rolling down my cheeks... when we got to the car and I tried to articulate my feelings on the film to my husband I was just like
Several great performances here - when Brendan Gleeson is the weakest performance, you know you've got an embarrassment of riches! I was worried Colin's weird tan would distract me, but it only jumped out in a couple of scenes.
Aftersun: A beautiful, melancholy character study with a strong directorial perspective. Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio are both fantastic, and so believable in their roles. Realized while watching that I have the same age gap with my parents (when I was 11, my parents were 31 going on 32), and it reinforced in my mind how young they really were - made me want to go look at our family photo albums.
It's not gonna be for everyone - several people afterward were very much like "What was the point??!?!" - but if it's for you, you will love it.
Barbarian: The first 1/3 of this was pretty damn good, but the plot got sloppy after that. I was YELLING at the TV about basically every decision the main character made after the first 10 minutes. Like, I get that you have to have some dumb decisions or there's no horror movie, but damn!!! I did like the ending + the fact that it wasn't too graphic.

That Banshees movie looks like it has almost no plot. From the trailer I’ve seen, it’s basically 2 friends who fall out and that’s it? I’m sure there’s more to it, but the trailer made it seem like they fall out and Colin wants to know why… the end.
