Follow up to this post.

To celebrate Filipino History Month, I put together a list of Filipina actresses, musicians, and other celebs. There are far fewer surprises on this list than the previous one (the roller coaster of Enrique Iglesias is a tough act to follow). Let's celebrate these talented Filipinas!

Thanks for the list but...Many of them seems to have distant relation/ancestry with the Philippines, sometime dating from their grand-parents ? I mean, I clicked on that article expecting a list of famous popstars from the philippines and to maybe get some music recommendation and I didn't expect to read about Becky Walters, who is 1/5 filipinos (and 1/10 native-americans !!!!!) and whose main achievement was dating Leonardo Dicaprio for 1 year and starring in a niche tv shows once in 2017 lol

Filipinos like to claim celebrities who have like 0.001% Filipino ancestry. (I'm Pinoy myself)

Honestly, same ! (i'm from switzerland) I just thought it was a bit weird to celebrate a country history month with mostly people so foreign to the country itself !^^

Lol this reminds me of a Korean rapper Dok2 who claimed Nicole Scherzinger was his first cousin and then a year later they were related like they share the same blood but never met her. Haha

Filipinos will claim anyone who has gained international recognition, even if it's just a drop of Filipino blood in their veins.

What kind of music recommendations were you looking for??

Four of these women are full Filipina.

Fourteen of them are half Filipina.

Two of them are a quarter Filipina (one grandparent who was full Filipino).

Three of them are an eighth Filipina (and two of those people are cousins so they share the same Filipino relative).

Five of the people on the list didn’t have a clear percentage.

As someone else mentioned, Filipinos are proud of anyone with even the slightest bit of Filipino heritage so this post is to celebrate all of them. If they aren’t Filipina enough for your liking, feel free to add more people to the list who are only 100% Filipina!

Confirming what others have said that Filipinos will claim anyone with a teeny bit of Filipino ancestry. Id even go as far as saying they’ll make a big deal about it if someone even interacted with a Filipino once in passing.

I understand what you're saying but I'm 1/4 Filipino and very proud of that despite my mother being raised in foster care by white people and removing her from her culture. I've gotten a lot of people saying that I'm milking my filipino ancestry to be more interesting even though I'm researching and getting involved to honour it and reclaim it on behalf of my mom.

I realize I'm sensitive here but this kind of convo makes me uncomfy.

I'm sorry people are being dicks about it. Ultimately, it's not up to anyone to gatekeep being Filipina or tell you that you aren't Filipina enough. The fact that you are making the effort to learn about a culture that you weren't raised with shows that you have a genuine interest.
