These places always sound like hell on earth. One of the tiktokers I follow was basically handed off to strangers on her 14th bday to one of those "wilderness camps" for "troubled teens" and ended up stuck for four months in 7 ft of snow. People really think traumatizing the absolute hell out of kids is going to make them "straighten up and fly right" but it's just going to make them hate you and put your ass in a nursing home.

A friend of mine is a writer and he wrote a book based off those wilderness camps. It's fiction but it was inspired by what his friend went through. The fact these places operate at all with no oversight is so scary.

They wouldn't let any of the kids leave, they were dropped off with a handful of staff with tents and a few supplies and then a wicked blizzard came through. I don't remember the full details but it was a pretty harrowing type of survival situation.

She's in therapy and can have a sense of humor about a lot of things now. Sadly that's just the tip of the iceberg with things her parents have put her through. I can relate to a lot of her stories so I have a huge amount of respect and admiration for her.
