People have been fascinated by murder and grisly crimes forever so, in that regard, I am not surprised. What I don't understand is people acting as though these are ~just stories~ and not the lives of actual people. At least in the 20s when people were fascinated by this shit they couldn't speak to the victims family on Facebook.

But there is a psychological explanation to why people are more forgiving of people who are perceived as beautiful. See, that's the science side that I find fascinating. They even did a study where they split two groups A and B and they both had to judge a criminal. Group A had a pretty one and Group B a considered "ugly" one. Group A was a lot more lenient than Group B.

like I thought Under the Banner of Heaven did a fantastic job retelling that fucked up story and showing just how sick that family was and how horrific those men were while also honoring the victims. similarly Mindhunter was a fascinating deconstruction of toxic masculinity.
BUT...when it's just shock and gratuitous...nah
